Dear Interior Design Alumni and Friends,
I am writing with an exciting update about our department.
In August 2026, the Department of Interior Architecture & Design will officially become the School of Design, reflecting a broader vision for how design is taught, practiced, and applied across disciplines. The transition marks a significant evolution for the College of Fine Arts, expanding its approach to design education while building on an established foundation.
While our name is changing, our dedication to excellence in design education remains as strong as ever. Since 1973, this department has been helping students build bright futures in design, shaping the spaces and objects that surround us. The launch of the School of Design is an expansion of that mission, to prepare the next generation of designers with the critical-thinking, problem-solving and technical skills needed to thrive in a range of dynamic and emerging design fields.
At the center of this change is the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Design and the continuation of a Graduate Certificate in Graphic Design.
While the School of Design introduces new academic pathways, our nationally recognized interior design programs will continue with the same rigor and quality, ensuring that current students experience no disruption, remaining part of a legacy spanning more than five decades.
As design continues to expand beyond traditional boundaries, the School of Design positions Florida State to meet that moment by bridging disciplines, responding to industry needs, and preparing graduates to shape the future of creative work.
